The Harrowing

By Lone Vitus

Self-deception, greed and power. Perhaps humankind's greatest weaknesses, but for some their true strengths. Åge's story, from childhood to the present moment, is accommodated in a train of thought extending over a few hours.

Åge lives in a world where Mother wipes the kitchen counter with rags made from old underwear, all the while polishing the farm’s scratch-resistant surface without any regard for the cost; weaknesses are suppressed and cruelties downplayed.

Family relationships boil in a large stock pot, and Åge’s one and only, Mother, unconscionably controls its temperature. Dysfunctionality is wrapped in an embroidered façade.

It is unsettling. Harrowing.
